The following are some of my favorite quotes. I will be adding new ones as I discover them.

"See, it’s a daily chore tryin to do the right thing. Not because the right thing is hard to do—it ain’t. It’s just cause the right thing—well, the right thing’s got a way of eluding you. You give me a compass that tells good from bad, and boy I’ll be a soldier of the righteous truth. But them two things are a slippery business, and tellin them apart might as well be a blind man’s guess.”
- Alden Bell, The Reapers Are the Angels

"I can't run my own race. I'm constantly checking to see what's happening in the other lanes."
- Laura Buzo, Good Oil

"My standard for verisimilitude is simple and I came to it when I started to write prose narrative: fuck the average reader. I was always told to write for the average reader in my newspaper life. The average reader, as they meant it, was some suburban white subscriber with two-point-whatever kids and three-point-whatever cars and a dog and a cat and lawn furniture. He knows nothing and he needs everything explained to him right away, so that exposition becomes this incredible, story-killing burden. Fuck him. Fuck him to hell."
- David Simon

"Love, in the universal sense, is unconditional acceptance. In the individual sense, the one-on-one sense, try this: we can say we love each other if my life is better because you're in it and your life is better because I'm in it. The intensity of the love is weighted by how much better."
- Chris Crutcher, Deadline

"The truth doesn't set you free, you know. It makes you feel awkward and embarrassed and defenseless and red in the face and horrified and petrified and vulnerable. But free? I don't feel free. I feel like shit."
- Melina Marchetta, Saving Francesca

"But the world moves on, even when you don't want it to, even when change feels like the end of everything. It never stops. That's harsh and magical and somewhat comforting because nothing is immutable, however much we want it to be. Moments cannot be caught like fossils in amber, ever-perfect, ever-beautiful. They go dark and raw, full of shadows, leaving you with the memories. And the world moves on."
- Ann Aguirre, Aftermath

"There is nothing quite as good as folding up into a book and shutting the world outside. If I pick the right one, I can be beautiful, or fall in love, or live happily ever after. Maybe even all three."
- Bill Condon, A Straight Line to My Heart

"Love like that is what they make movies about. It's the thing you're supposed to want, the answer to every question, the song that you're supposed to sing. But love like that can be too big, too. It can be something you shouldn't be trusted to hold when you're the kind of person who drops the eggs and breaks the remote control. Love doesn’t break easily, I found. But people do."
- Amy Garvey, Cold Kiss

"I know they still love each other, but I guess love is kind of like a marshmallow in a microwave on high. After it explodes, it’s still a marshmallow. But, you know, now it’s a complicated marshmallow."
- Cath Crowley, Graffiti Moon

"The only thing worse than a boy who hates you: a boy that loves you."
- Markus Zusak, The Book Thief

"This is our story to tell. He says it in his Ten Commandments way and it hits me that way: profoundly. You’d think for all the reading I do, I would have thought about this before, but I haven’t. I’ve never once thought about the interpretative, the storytelling aspect of life, of my life. I always felt like I was in a story, yes, but not like I was the author of it, or like I had any say in its telling whatsoever.
You can tell your story any way you damn well please.
It’s your solo."
- Jandy Nelson, The Sky Is Everywhere

"I wonder at my incapacity for easy banter, smooth conversation, empty words to fill awkward moments. I don't have a closet filled with umms and ellipses ready to insert at the beginnings and ends of sentences. I don't know how to be a verb, an adverb, any kind of modifier. I'm a noun through and through.""
- Tahereh Mafi, Unravel Me

"People who think that grammar is just a collection of rules and restrictions are wrong. If you get to like it, grammar reveals the hidden meaning of history, hides disorder and abandonment, links things and brings opposites together. Grammar is a wonderful way of organizing the world how you’d like it to be."
- Daphne de Vigan, No and Me

“'Our bodies aren't strangers,' he said, his voice ragged. 'Our spirits aren't strangers.' He held her face in his hands. 'Tell me what part of me is stranger to you and I'll destroy that part of me.'
And she wept to hear his words.”
- Melina Marchetta, Quintana of Charyn

"We know that we were in the right
(The coming dawn, the ending night).
So here is when we stop the lies.
The time is come. We have to Rise.
-From Dandelion Mine, the blog of Magdalene Grace Garcia, August 7, 2041."
- Mira Grant, Blackout

"Language is my mother, my father, my husband, my brother, my sister, my whore, my mistress, my check-out girl. Language is a complimentary moist lemon-scented cleansing square or handy freshen-up wipette. Language is the breath of God, language is the dew on a fresh apple, it's the soft rain of dust that falls into a shaft of morning light as you pluck from an old bookshelf a half-forgotten book of erotic memoirs; language is the creak on the stair, it's a spluttering match held to a frosted pane, it's a half-remembered childhood birthday party, it's the warm wet, trusting touch of a leaking nappy, the hulk of a charred Panzer, the underside of a granite boulder, the first downy growth on the upper lip of a Mediterranean girl, it's cobwebs long since overrun by an old Wellington boot."
— Stephen Fry

  1. Is this new? I don't remember seeing it before, but I love it! I haven't read The Sky is Everywhere, A Straight Line To My Heart, or Deadline but they are probably my favorite quotes on here, along with, of course, ones from Saving Francesca, The Book Thief, Graffiti Moon, and Good Oil. I'm actually surprised a Maggie Stiefvater quote didn't make its way on here! ;)

    1. Not new, no, it was just hard to notice before. Maggie's quotes are always hard to pull out of context. Her writing is amazing, but she just doesn't do Big Truths of Life. :)

  2. I always love that quote from The Sky is Everywhere. It never fails to remind me how life is so good. :)

  3. excellent piece of information, I had come to know about your website from my friend kishore, pune,i have read atleast 8 posts of yours by now, and let me tell you, your site gives the best and the most interesting information. This is just the kind of information that i had been looking for, i'm already your rss reader now and i would regularly watch out for the new posts, once again hats off to you! Thanx a lot once again, Regards, bob marley quotes
