The paranormal war that engulfed New Orleans seven years ago is over. But the battle for the city is just beginning . . .
Claire Connolly is a Sensitive, infected with magic when the Veil that divides humanity from the world beyond fell. Magic can easily consume and destroy a Sensitive, and if Claire’s secret is discovered she’ll be locked into the walled district of Devil’s Isle along with every other Paranormal left in the city.
Bounty hunter Liam Quinn discovered Claire’s secret, but refused to turn her in. Together they saved New Orleans from the resurgence of magic that nearly destroyed it. But now a dangerous cult is on the rise, and it will take both Claire and Liam—and magical allies within Devil’s Isle’s towering walls—to defeat the occult threat before magic corrupts them both...

Chloe Neill is one of the best urban fantasy authors out there. She writes her books with a very sure hand and we as readers never once doubt her ability to use every scene to its maximum potential. Armed with experience and a whole lot of love for her characters, she writes one successful story after another. When you go to a bookstore for your urban fantasy fix, Neill is as safe a bet as they come.

With The Veil, there was some fear that she won’t be able to pull herself away from her long and successful Chicagoland Vampires series, but that proved to be unfounded. Devil’s Isle shares no similarities whatsoever with Chicagoland, except maybe in quality. But even there the new series seems to outshine its predecessor – the plotting is tighter, the writing better, and the characters far more relatable.

In this moment, Claire is one of the best heroines UF has to offer. With human fears and a backbone of steel, she is easy to love and even easier to relate to. We see her at her best and at her worst, but even when she’s down, she’s someone we can admire. Claire has no family left but she is surrounded by wonderful friends who are a substitute family of sorts and she keeps earning new ones with her loyalty and integrity. It’s wonderful to see her interact with others, weigh her every action and always try to do best by everyone.

We finally see some progress between Liam and Claire, but of course it can’t come without a whole new set of complications. These two have such chemistry between them, a strong magnetism that can be felt in every interaction, and even when they’re not together, they seem to present a united front. Liam has legitimate fears that seem unfair to them both, but Claire gets to look at them from a different angle and finally understand his position. Despite their lack of touching, though, at least for the most part, they behave and function as a couple, and everyone else seems to view them as one.

I hesitate to write much about the plot except to say that it’s even better than what we’ve seen in The Veil. Right now, zealots of all kinds are the biggest danger humanity faces, and I loved seeing that transferred into Claire’s world as well. There will always be crazies and there will always be followers, but we determine how we stand up to them.

Overall, with Devil’s Isle to look forward to, saying goodbye to Ethan and Merit will be much easier. I will say that I’m desperate to get my hands on the next book and that I trust Neill to make it nothing short of amazing

  1. Yay! I'm so excited you loved this every bit as much as I did. It really is quickly becoming a favorite.

  2. I'm really excited you loved this one, Maja! I loved The Veil last year and have been eagerly awaiting The Sight. I agree that Claire's fears and her backbone are what make her so likeable. I'm particularly looking forward to the romantic progression between her and Liam even though it's light. I have a feeling they are going to be one of those couples who just explode when they get together and the wait for it is going to amp that feeling up for readers.
    Wonderful review, Maja!

  3. Are they connected to the other one?

  4. I liked this one but maybe not as much as book 1, I felt away a few times but I'm glad it was not the case for you!

  5. I am so happy you are loving this series too..and yes I cannot wait for the next book!

  6. I'm still not sure about picking this series up. I don't know why but it's just not grabbing my attention like I hoped.

  7. Oh nice! I sadly didn't get to this one in time for its release but its high in priority on my review pile! I too love Neill's book and I really enjoyed the first book to this series with probably just a touch of new world confusion! LOL. Diving into this one will be easier though except for my memory loss issues! ;P Great review!

  8. I haven't read a book by this author so I'm not familiar with her work. I'm glad she's not a one hit wonder, though. And that she can go outside of what she's always known and venture into a totally different world. I hope the books keep their momentum. :)

  9. I've never been that interested to pick up a novel by this author, but now I'm really regretting having missed out! I'll have to go through her backlog at once because I love a good UF and if she's one of the best, I definitely need her books in my life. Wonderful review, Maja! :)

  10. YESSSS!! So excited for this one! I cannot wait till my Kindle UK edition finally downloads tonight at midnight so I can start reading!

  11. I've only read a couple in the CV series and like it a lot, but have yet to love it. I know UF can take a few books. Now this one... I have a feeling I will love it from the first go. I was going to wait to dive in and read a few more CV first, but I think I may try it sooner rather than later. :D

  12. Well, I was reluctant about picking up The Veil, for the fear you mention in your review too. But there's something to be said about a sequel that surpasses its predecessor, and so... I guess I'll be reading The Veil 😉 Beautiful review, Maja.

  13. I've seen good things about this series, and your review has confirmed that I'll definitely want to check this one out! I'm on an urban fantasy kick at the moment. Lovely review!

  14. Great review! I love this series, too, and that ending for this one was killer. It's going to be a long wait for the next.
