Feature & Follow Friday (8)

Welcome, book lovers! We are as excited as ever about spending another Friday with you. It was a fabulous week for The Nocturnal Library - both of us have read some pretty amazing books, went through big changes in our personal/professional lives, but what we're most excited about is our interview with gothic urban fantasy author Kristen Painter, author of the House of Comarré series. There's still time to enter the giveaway of Blood Rights, the first book in the series if you're interested. But let's get down to #FF business.

This is our eighth Follow My Book Blog Friday, hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. Click on the image to learn more.

Q: Which book genre do you avoid at all costs and why?

Easy: historical romance. I apologize to all HR fans, I really don't mean to offend anyone, but I was never really interested in history, nor am I interested in romance if there isn't a compelling plot to hold it together (which is why I tend to avoid paranormal romance as well). Also, I used to read some chick lit here and there when I was younger, but lately I find that I lack patience for it, so I avoid that too. Sorry, Sophie Kinsella, it's not you, it's me.

I can't really answer for my co-blogger (and bestestest friend :D), but maybe she'll add her answer to mine when she can.

Later that day.....

"Here comes the working woman... Hi, everybody! *waves* So nice to intrude into one of Maja's posts! So, about the book genre; there isn't really I genre I avoid, contrarily to my co-blogger/beloved preference, I read historical romance, too. I tend to avoid anything that is loooong, booooring and thinks it's "higher" literature. For this reason, I guess autobiographies don't show up often in my to-be-read shelf. Also, I'm not really interested in self-help books (I translated some and I wanted to shoot myself). That's all from me!"

Thanks for stopping by, bloggers. We really appreciate it.

  2. We all have our preferences, when speaking to my mom and discussion what I am reading.. I usually start out with "It's nothing you would like" I know her likes and dislikes and she knows mine!! If we all liked the same thing then we would all be pretty bored..

  4. I feel the same way, I read chick lit as a teen but these days it's annoying and historical romances don't usually interest me either.

  13. I have to say I can be easily sucked in to a romance if it's well written. I tend not to have picked up anything historical though. I may have to give it a try at some point, though my TBR pile is mountainous.

    Now following :)

  14. I read a Historical Romance once and it didn't end well although I'm not giving up on this genre altogether because I think it's the book that's the problem, not the genre per se. Happy Friday! :)

  15. I have to agree with both your genre's. I can only read some Historical Romance depending, though try to avoid it.

  16. Historical books are where I get most of my history from. Plenty of drama can be found in history, but I'm not a huge fan of romance mostly because it sometimes lacks plot but also because I need some monsters in my books ;)

  18. Sirantha Jax, Maja, I will check out...one day. For you, my darling. :D I like Ann Aguirre's YA so maybe I will enjoy her Adult books, too. I didn't realize they were science fiction!

  19. I like historical romance, but there definitely needs to be a decent plot/characters to add to the romance. I forgot about self-help...can't stand most of those!

  22. I stay away from self-help books like the plague. I don't need someone else telling me what's wrong with me, thank you very much! (I should maybe update my own post to include self-help! I think I might hate them more than westerns!)

    Thanks for stopping by...following back!

  23. I'm not always a big fan of HF; some eras are more interesting than others so I generally enjoy reading about them (ie the Tudor Era) but I wouldn't say historical fiction is the first genre I'd reach for when looking for a new book to read!

    Thanks for stopping by! :D

  40. Yeah, I also don't read HR too and while I also like Cecelia Ahern's book, I have a hard time putting them in the Chick-lit niche. Oh, well.... have a great weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Maja, have you tried reading chick lit with more depth? I mean the ones that are thicker than usual and tackle more serious relationship problems than they're fluffy counterparts (like Sarra Manning's Unsticky). Because I love books like those.

Lisa, I don't read literary fiction or biographies either.

  42. I'm a historical romance fanatic but I do agree on autobiographies. I generally don't like them especially celebrity related ones.

  43. I don't usually care for romance either, but I actually enjoy young adult historical romance, if there's actual plot involved and the main goal isn't just romance for romance sake. :)
